About

I am Evelynn Starr, a 40-something journalist-turned-PR-hack, currently living in Switzerland.

I’m definitely a dog-person (married to a cat-person) and my passions include speed, in all its forms. I’m a competitive inline skater, a hobby aviatrix, and will try out almost any sport at least once. I travel a lot too.

Jobwise, I’m currently navigating my way through the corporate minefield, sometimes more and sometimes less successfully. I’m really the last person who expected to see me end up in a glass cubicle and my attitude often reflects that. But the rent’s gotta be paid somehow.

Evelynn came to life in 2001 at the corner table of a dark and dingy sports tavern on 8th Avenue in New York City, over a hamburger and a beer. She is the incarnation of a good friend, a.k.a. “The Oracle.” It was 9/17 or so, and the City still smelled of smoke and felt like nuclear winter. Wide-eyed, shell-shocked New Yorkers were making pilgrimages downtown, to confirm for themselves that what they had seen on TV was real. The Oracle spent the evening trying to convince me that Evelynn’s star(r) was rising.

Four weeks after that exquisite hamburger, Evelynn Starr was walking around on the deck of an aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea, herself a bit shell-shocked, watching F-18s take off for missions over Afghanistan. (So hang on, how did I get here again?) And the rest, as they say, is history.

This blog doesn’t really have a dedicated theme… yet. The point of all this is to get me creatively writing again after a few years of  meandering in a more or less barren literary wilderness. I’m not kidding myself – this is not going to be Pulitzer-Prize-winning literature. But it will be an outlet for the stuff that goes on in my head and the people, places and experiences that enrich my life; a way for me to practice putting words together again, out of which sentences and whole paragraphs will form – and writing them down. For only practice makes perfect.

Welcome to the world of Evelynn Starr. Hope you enjoy the ride.
